The West St. Paul City Council has been actively addressing key community issues, focusing on rental property management and advancing significant development projects.
Rental Property License Review
During recent sessions, the Council evaluated the rental license application for a single-family property at 1064 Robert Street. The property has a history of code violations and is currently in disrepair. Initially, there was consideration to deny the rental application, which would have led to tenant eviction. However, the Council opted to continue the review, allowing the property owner time to address the issues and the city to notify the tenant. A proposed mitigation plan has been agreed upon by the owner. If the Council decides to deny the application, staff recommends providing the tenant with 90 days to vacate the property.
150 Thompson Redevelopment Project
The Council has also been progressing with the 150 Thompson redevelopment project, located at the former YMCA site. The project includes 457 apartment units in two buildings, 19 townhome units, commercial space in the former AutoZone, infrastructure improvements, and plans for a future park. The project has faced delays and cost increases, but the Council has approved additional costs to keep it moving forward.
Community Engagement and Future Developments
Community involvement remains a priority. The West Side Community Organization is actively working on strategic areas, including growing the West Side Tenant Union and exploring collective ownership models. Additionally, the city is engaging with residents to shape urban planning projects like Destination Robert Street and the West Side 10-Year Community Plan.
Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming events and stay informed about city developments through official channels.
